What is an endoscopy?
Endoscopy is an internal examination of the Gastrointestinal (GI) tract using a soft, flexible tube with a very small camera on the end. Images are transmitted to a screen so your endoscopist can visualise the lining of your GI tract. During an endoscopy the endoscopist may take biopsies (tiny samples of tissue for review under a microscope), remove polyps, open blocked or narrow areas, and treat bleeding. Endoscopy is generally well tolerated using a combination of light sedation and analgesia (pain relief).
